The losses
Deforestation, extinction and land clearing.

This is the hard part of the topic, and it deserves to be told straight. The living world is under real pressure, and Australia carries some of that story more heavily than most countries. Understanding it honestly is not the same as despairing. It is the thing that makes the solutions later in this subject worth the effort.
Habitat loss, the biggest driver
Worldwide, the single biggest reason species decline is not hunting or pollution. It is habitat loss: the clearing of the forests, grasslands and wetlands that animals and plants live in. When you cut a forest for farmland or a suburb, you are not just removing trees. You are removing the homes, food and shelter of everything that lived there. Most extinctions trace back to this simple, physical cause.
Deforestation is the clearest example. Forests hold a large share of all land living species, so when they are cut down, the losses are concentrated and severe. Some clearing is for timber, but much of it is to make room for farming and grazing to feed a growing world.
Why less habitat means fewer species
Why does clearing land translate so directly into fewer species? It comes down to space and numbers. A patch of bush can only feed and shelter so many animals, so a large, connected area of habitat supports a large population, and a large population can absorb a bad season, a disease or a run of predators and still recover. Shrink that habitat to a few scattered patches and each patch holds only a small population, and small populations wink out easily, from a single fire, a single drought or simply from bad luck in one breeding season. Clearing does not have to kill every animal at once. It lowers the ceiling on how many can ever live there, and then time does the rest.
There is a second, quieter effect called fragmentation. When a forest is broken into islands by roads, fences and paddocks, the animals in one patch can no longer reach the animals in the next, so a population that was once one becomes many small, isolated ones that cannot mix, cannot recolonise a patch after a local loss, and slowly drift towards inbreeding. The edges of each patch are drier, windier and more exposed too, which lets weeds and introduced predators push in, so a fragmented forest is worse off than its shrunken area alone would suggest. A map that still shows plenty of green can hide country that no longer functions as one.
Australia's honest record
Australia is a wealthy, stable country, and it still has one of the worse records in the developed world on two fronts: land clearing and mammal extinctions. We have cleared large areas of native vegetation, much of it in recent decades, and we have lost more mammal species since European arrival than almost anywhere else on Earth. These are not comfortable facts, and pretending otherwise helps no one. Naming them clearly is the first step to changing them.
Australia's invasive species problem
There is a second pressure that is specifically Australian. Our animals evolved for tens of thousands of years without certain predators, so when new ones arrived they had few defences. Introduced species have done enormous damage:
- Feral cats and foxes hunt native mammals and birds that never evolved to escape them, and are a leading cause of our mammal extinctions.
- Cane toads, brought in to control a beetle, spread across the north and poison the native predators that try to eat them.
- Rabbits, weeds and other introduced species crowd out native plants and strip the land bare.
It is worth seeing why an introduced predator can be so much worse than a native one. A native predator and its prey evolved together over a very long time, so the prey carries the right instincts, the right speed and the right hiding behaviour to keep the losses survivable, and the two settle into a balance. A cat or a fox arrives into that balance from outside, hunting animals that read it as harmless because nothing in their history taught them otherwise, and it hunts whether or not it is hungry. That mismatch is why a single new predator, on a continent whose animals never met its kind, can push species to extinction in a way the local hawks and quolls never did.
A common misconception
Isn't extinction natural? Species have always come and gone, so what makes now any different? It is true that extinction is a normal part of life on Earth, and that almost every species that ever lived has eventually disappeared. But there is a normal background rate at which this happens, slowly, a few species over long stretches of time, and what is happening now runs far above that rate, fast enough that biologists describe it as a mass extinction, the kind normally caused by asteroids or vast volcanic events. What is different now is the speed, and the fact that this time the cause is us, which also means it is something we can choose to slow.
Why the losses are quiet
Extinction almost never looks like a film. There is rarely a last dramatic scene. It looks like a small mammal that used to be common becoming rare, then only seen in a few places, then not seen for years, then gone, with almost no one noticing the day it happened. The losses are quiet and local, which is exactly why they are easy to miss and easy to ignore. Learning to notice them is part of the work.
Where this shows up around you
You do not have to go to a rainforest to see this. It is the block on the edge of your town that was scrub last year and is a housing estate now, the roadside trees taken out to widen a road, the wetland drained for a car park. And it is closer than that. A well fed pet cat still hunts, and a cat allowed to roam at night kills native birds, lizards and small mammals in its own suburb, which is why keeping a cat indoors or in a run, especially after dark, is one of the few direct things a household can do about the problem this lesson describes.
