Waste: where things actually go

Landfill, recycling truths and food waste.

The bin is a magic trick. You put something in, a truck comes, and it vanishes. Except it does not vanish. Everything you have ever thrown away still exists somewhere, and knowing where it went changes how you see the bin.

Most general waste in Australia goes to landfill: engineered pits where rubbish is compacted and buried. Modern landfills are far better managed than old tips, with liners and gas capture, but they have a hidden climate problem. When food scraps and garden waste are buried without air, they rot anaerobically and release methane, a greenhouse gas far more potent than carbon dioxide over the short term. A banana peel in landfill does more climate damage than the same peel in a compost bin, purely because of where it broke down.

It is worth being clear about why the same banana peel has two different fates. Composting happens with air, where microbes that breathe oxygen break the scraps down into carbon dioxide, water and a crumbly soil like material, giving off gentle heat. Landfill buries the same scraps under tonnes of compacted rubbish where almost no oxygen reaches them, so a different set of microbes takes over and produces methane instead. Methane traps far more heat than carbon dioxide, many times more over the couple of decades after it is released, which is why organic waste in landfill matters so much for the climate. Modern sites capture some of this gas and even burn it for electricity, however the capture is never complete, and a real share still leaks to the sky. So the cleanest option is simply to keep the food scraps out of the ground in the first place.

Recycling: the truth in the yellow bin

Recycling is real, but it is a manufacturing business, not a magic portal. Clean paper, cardboard, glass, aluminium and rigid plastic bottles genuinely get sorted, baled and remade, and aluminium in particular is worth recycling almost endlessly. The trouble is what researchers call wishcycling: hoping something is recyclable and putting it in the yellow bin anyway. Soft plastics like bags and wrappers jam sorting machines. Food smeared containers can contaminate whole batches. When too much wrong material arrives, loads that could have been recycled get sent to landfill instead.

Why is aluminium worth recycling almost endlessly while plastic is not? It comes down to what the material is made of. Aluminium is an element, so melting a can down and casting a new one does not change the metal itself, and it can go around the loop again and again using a small fraction of the energy needed to smelt it from ore the first time. Plastic is built from long chains of molecules, and every time it is melted and reprocessed those chains shorten and weaken, so recycled plastic usually comes back as a lower grade product, a process often called downcycling. A clear drink bottle might become carpet fibre or a park bench, but rarely another clear bottle of the same quality. This is one reason the circular economy, which the last lesson in this topic explains, puts so much weight on reducing and reusing plastic rather than trusting recycling to catch it all.

A common misconception hides in plain sight on the bottom of your containers. The triangle of chasing arrows with a number inside looks like a promise that the item is recyclable, but it is not. That symbol is a resin code, a label for the type of plastic, and it says nothing about whether your local service can actually recycle that shape or grade. Plenty of items stamped with the triangle still belong in the general waste bin, and the only reliable guide is your council's own list of what it accepts. When in doubt, the honest move is to check rather than to hope, because hoping is exactly the wishcycling that spoils good loads.

For years, Australia's recycling had another secret: much of it was shipped overseas, mostly to China, to be sorted and processed. In 2018 China stopped accepting most imported recycling, and the easy export path closed almost overnight. Bales piled up, some councils quietly landfilled collections, and Australia was forced to start building real domestic recycling capacity. It was an embarrassing moment that is slowly becoming a useful one.

Soft plastics are the clearest example of how hard this is. The bread bags, chip packets and cling wrap that fill a kitchen cannot go in the kerbside yellow bin, because they wrap around the spinning parts of sorting machines and shut them down. For a while Australia had a national soft plastics collection in supermarkets, until it was suspended in 2022 when it turned out the collected plastic had nowhere near enough places to go and was being stockpiled instead. It was a hard lesson in a simple truth: a recycling scheme only works if there is a real factory at the other end that wants the material. Collecting is the easy half; making something out of the result is the half that has to exist first.

Food waste: the biggest fixable share

Here is the strange part: the heaviest thing in most household bins is food. Uneaten leftovers, forgotten vegetables, whole meals scraped into the bin. Wasted food wastes everything that produced it, the water, the land, the fuel, the money, and then makes methane in landfill as a parting gift. It is also the most fixable waste there is: planning meals, storing food properly, eating leftovers and composting scraps are boring, cheap and genuinely effective.

This is the same lesson the water topic taught from the other side. Every meal carries a hidden water bill, so a scraped plate throws away the water that grew the food and the money that bought it, and then the buried scraps add methane on top. That is why food is the first thing worth fixing: it is the heaviest part of the bin, the most wasteful when it is wasted, and the easiest to change without spending a cent.

One more tool worth knowing: container deposit schemes now run across Australia, paying 10 cents for each eligible bottle, can or carton returned. The refund sounds tiny, but it works, because it turns litter into something worth picking up. Return rates for drink containers jumped once the schemes arrived.

What this looks like in your week

Your own bins tell this whole story if you look. The heaviest thing you throw out is probably food: the forgotten half of a loaf, the salad that went slimy, the dinner nobody finished. Your yellow bin is doing real work when it holds clean bottles, cans, paper and cardboard, and quietly failing when it holds a greasy pizza box, a bagful of soft plastics or a half full bottle of juice. And the cans and bottles worth ten cents each are, quite literally, small change you can hand back for a refund instead of burying. None of this asks for sainthood. It asks for a minute of attention at the bin, which is where almost all the difference is made.
