Reducing waste and emissions

At home and at school.

The last lesson gave you the hierarchy. This one is the playbook: the practical moves that actually shift the big categories for a student, at home and at school. None of them require money you do not have or permission you cannot get.

Food waste first

Food thrown away wastes everything used to grow, transport and chill it, and then it rots in landfill making methane. It is also the lever most within a student's reach. Three habits do most of the work: plan before shopping so the fridge holds meals rather than ingredients with no plan, store things properly so they last, and treat leftovers as tomorrow's lunch rather than a sad obligation. A freezer is a pause button. Use it.

Why methane, and why does it matter where food rots? In a compost heap or a garden, scraps break down with oxygen and mostly return carbon dioxide that the plants only recently absorbed. Buried deep in landfill there is no oxygen, so different microbes do the digesting, and they release methane instead, a greenhouse gas far more powerful than carbon dioxide over the decades that matter most. This is why many Australian councils now run green lidded organics bins that accept food scraps: the same banana peel becomes compost in one bin and methane in the other. If your council has one, using it properly is a genuine lever. If it does not, a polite request for one is a preview of the next two lessons.

Energy habits that actually register

Heating and cooling are usually the biggest energy users in a home, so they are where habits count. Every degree you push a heater up or an air conditioner down costs real energy, so pick a moderate setting and put on or take off a layer first. Heat or cool the room you are in, not the whole house, and close doors and curtains so the comfort stays put. Shorter hot showers help because heating water takes serious energy. Switching off lights and idle appliances helps too, just less than people assume. It is the warm rooms and hot water doing the heavy lifting.

A worked example: the shower

Here is why the shower keeps appearing in energy advice. Water is unusually hard to heat: it absorbs more energy per degree than almost any everyday material, so every litre of hot water is expensive in energy terms before you have done anything else with it. Take an illustrative shower head flowing at 9 litres a minute. An 8 minute shower sends 72 litres of heated water down the drain and a 4 minute one sends 36, so the shorter shower saves 36 litres of hot water every single day, which over a year is more than 13,000 litres that never needed heating. Nobody is asking you to be a hero about it. Even 8 minutes down to 6 takes a quarter of the hot water off the bill, every day, without a cent spent.

The charger misconception

Now for the habit everyone mentions first. Unplugging phone chargers and switching things off at the wall does save energy, because standby power is real, however it is a small lever, and the interesting question is why it feels so much bigger than it is. The answer is visibility. A glowing standby light is something you can see and switch, while the energy pouring into a hot water tank or leaking out of an open door on a heated room is invisible, so attention goes to the wrong place. We manage what we can see. The fix is not to stop switching things off. It is to give the invisible things, warm rooms and hot water, the attention the glowing lights have been getting.

Transport, where choice genuinely exists

Be honest about which trips you control. If school is 40 kilometres away with no bus, that is a system problem, not a you problem. But short trips are often genuinely swappable: walking or riding beats being driven, the bus beats a solo car ride, and sharing lifts with a neighbour halves a trip's footprint at zero cost. The question worth asking is not can I always avoid the car, it is which regular trips could switch without pain.

Secondhand and repair

Every new thing carries an invisible backpack of energy, water and materials used to make it. Buying secondhand hands that backpack to a second life instead of demanding a new one. Op shops, marketplace apps, hand me downs and school uniform swaps all count. So does repair: a sewn seam, a new phone screen, a regassed bike brake. The most sustainable item is nearly always the one that already exists.

What this looks like in your actual week

Land this in a real week and it stops being abstract. Sunday night, ten minutes: look at what is in the fridge and decide what the leftovers become before they quietly die in a container. Tuesday and Thursday become bus days, decided once, never renegotiated with yourself at 8am. Your shower gets a playlist rule: one song, maybe two. Before you buy anything new, a marketplace app and an op shop get one search first, and when your headphones crackle you look up the fix before you look up the replacement. None of this is dramatic. All of it lands on the big categories, and none of it costs money you do not have.

Once versus default

Here is the difference between doing a thing and it counting: defaults. Taking the bus once is a gesture. Making Tuesday and Thursday bus days is a system. One meal planned is dinner. A Sunday planning habit is a fridge that stops throwing food away. Aim every change at becoming the thing you do without deciding, because decisions run out and defaults do not.

Everything in this lesson shrinks your own column of the ledger, which is worth doing and worth doing without guilt. But your own column was never the biggest one on the page.
